The risks of sitting for too long

Living a sedentary lifestyle can be dangerous to your health... The less sitting or lying down you do during the day, the better your chances for living a healthy life.

You can move around at work (whether in the office or at home) more than you think:

  • Take the stairs instead of the lift

  • Walk over and talk to your colleagues instead of emailing them

  • Take your lunch break away from your desk and enjoy a short walk outside if you can

  • Organise walking meetings

  • Use the 50:10 rule - spend 10 minutes away from your desk every 50 minutes (stand up and stretch or walk to make a hot drink)

  • Walk the dog

  • Walk around while talking on the phone

  • Take a break to go and fold laundry or walk up and down the stairs

Sitting for long periods can also cause problems with your back, especially if you consistently sit with poor posture or don’t use an ergonomically designed chair or workstation. Poor posture may also cause poor spine health such as compression in the discs in your spine, leading to premature degeneration, which can be very painful. You can learn more by downloading this back pain guide that has been compiled by our health experts.

Falling into the trap of an inactive lifestyle can lead to a slew of negative side effects. Signs that you’re not moving enough (and should start moving more asap!) include:

  • pain in your back, shoulders, or legs

  • feeling fatigued

  • experiencing increased stress

  • trouble sleeping

  • digestive issues
