Of all the things to prioritise please get your sleep quality right...here is our guide to getting that done:
The importance of the social engagement system for high performing leadership and construction of effective teams is critical. It is an area you may wish to support your clients with: putting the wrong person into a team is bad news for their wellbeing and that of the team. In time if it is bad for their wellbeing it will become a performance problem. Standard psychological profiling may offer some clues to the state of a person's social engagement system but it is only part of the picture. This is a complex area so the guide provided here is very much a high level explanation we have created to help establish the basics. It needs to be understood within the context of session 1 (resilience) for a deeper appreciation of personal resilience.
In summary of the three sessions, it might help to consider the following: the better your ability to sleep (use resources please!) and the better your ability to co-regulate (meaning you engage well with others) the less you need to worry about self-regulating techniques such as mindfulness....and the less you are likely to adopt maladaptive practices such as excessive alcohol/caffeine consumption. We all co-regulate and self-regulate as social mammals...however, it is often happening at the unconscious level. Working on your self-awareness to better understand this subtle dance between the two will enable you to better understand the recruitment of others into the right role. Key takeaways from the final session very helpfully provided by Colleen, are:
1. The more attuned we are to what is happening in the body, in conjunction with skills to work with that knowledge, the better able we are to manage our emotions, "read" others and manage their emotional states and engage in productive relationships.
2. The more we are attuned to ourselves (attuned to what our body is telling us, not just what is happening in the mind), the greater our ability to operate at optimal levels of performance and wellness. Mindfulness, as practised by Meg in the final session, is both a key tool to improve our self-regulation but also helps us improve our co-regulation. If we are calm and emotionally self-regulated, others will feel they are safe with us...this allows them to be more open, honest, trusting and collaborative. Meg skillfully brought a moment of calm to an otherwise fast-paced session...we can all learn to do this to not only improve our resilience/wellbeing and performance but to also to help others feel safe...what a wonderful skill in an uncertain world!
3. This attunement coupled with the ability to (neuro-physiologically) self-regulate (not the same thing as self-control) increases our will power, our health and our cognitive abilities.
4. All of this better enables us to be at our best. If this becomes part of an organization's culture, the end result if more productive, higher performing teams and organizations.
