Good Reasons for Regular Exercise
Exercise has been proven to improve many aspects of life including:
preventing and reducing effects of depression and anxiety
help people with arthritis
cure diseases
reduce blood pressure
reduce bad cholesterol
aid better sleep
improve sex life
The body was designed to perform at its optimum level when it is in a position of good posture. Prolonged bad posture means that the body will tighten in certain areas and loosen in other areas. Muscles will become weaker and some may not even work at all. What may this mean?
Your physical appearance may appear worse than it is. For example your stomach area may look larger than it is as your muscles cannot hold your waistline in; you may appear shorter than you are as your muscles do not hold you an in upright position - this can become worse as you get older leading to stooping and hunch shoulders; the muscles in your legs and rear will sag and lose their tone.
Your blood circulation can be affected which can make it difficult for energy to be transported around your body which may create a sluggish feeling; there can be an increased risk of muscle injury as a result of suddenly moving a body part that requires a regular flow of blood through the accompanying muscles. Even something as simple as moving your neck requires blood to be supplied to the relevant muscles.
Your movements may become restricted - if muscles that govern our daily regular movements are tense and poorly supplied with blood over a long period of time then you may experience a gradual reduction in the flexibility of your joint movements. This could take a long time to heal with the need for physiotherapy, massage and targeted exercise programmes.
With poor blood circulation, less active muscles and more restricted body movements the outcome is likely to be a less fit person with an increased risk of weight gain and the physical and psychological problems associated with it. As with the rest of the health and well-being programme we are really seeking to develop our lifestyles so that we can minimise the risk of different types of ill health as we become older.
The UK government now recommends 150 minutes of exercise per week:
lack of exercise has been found to cause as many deaths per year as smoking, 5.3million - this is based on studies into coronary heart disease, type 2 diabetes, both breast and bowel cancer.
every generation is getting worse.
research has shown that 15 minutes of exercise per day can boost life expectancy and cut death risk by 14%. Also the couch potato lifestyle can cut lifespan by 5 years.
