Welcome to your lockdown and working at home support.
We are delighted to be offering some assistance to you during these strange circumstances we find ourselves in. We may all be affected in a wide range of ways but one way to pull it all together is to say that for most people, any type of significant change:
at work, or
to a relationship, or
to our health;
or to the health of someone close to us
can feel stressful...and this pandemic may be triggering change on all of those fronts. So it's no wonder if you are finding being at home for long periods a little challenging. It's a cliche, but also a truth, to say that we are often 'creatures of habit'. When our habits are forced to change it can feel disorientating and unsettling. Even a simple habit of going to buy food has become potentially more dangerous, unusual and, therefore, a more anxious experience. We'll look at some ways of managing this uncertainty in later releases and also take a closer look at anxiety too.
In this release we'd like to get straight to the heart of some important concepts and also to give some practical suggestions and links to other resources. So the three areas that are important to address are:
self-care
structure to working from home
exercise and why it's more important than ever...sorry if you don't like exercise! Please bear in mind that it is possibly the most important thing you can do to boost your immune system strength and to improve your immune system's response to any future vaccine which is developed.
Here's the link to self care - what it is and why it's important. This link also covers creating structure while working from home with some really practical ideas. It also provides links to additional resources you can study for more support and ideas.
Here's a few sentences on the fact we are social mammals and why that's important to acknowledge when our working environment changes....and a little more about the rest of our team and our experience (click here to read).
Here's the link to exercise including a short video introduction from Nathan Douglas, Double Olympian triple jumper. The link also includes a further link to an extensive video library of exercises you can do at home. We have created this library to provide many options for you…and, of course, there are lots of other sources for inspiration on this. Our library comes with simple guidance on how to do the exercises correctly and they have been compiled with sports scientists from Loughborough University…the world’s leading sports science department. So we have selected the exercises which are likely to be most beneficial for you and tried to demonstrate them simply.
In addition to the individual resources we have created for all employees at HB Public Law we would also like to address any support you feel is helpful as someone with people management responsibilities. To start, here is an extract from a line-manager guide produced by the CIPD. The CIPD is the professional body for HR and personal development (click the link below to view). Obviously, you will have your own opinions on some of it and to be fair to them they have reissued it this week to try and get something out in these unusual circumstances i.e. it's not tailored to these strange times we are in. I have marked up some comments of my own in case they are helpful...if not, please feel free to tell me!
