The immediate mood and longer-term mental health benefits of movement

1. it has both an immediate and longer lasting positive effect i.e. it is a very simple, free and direct way you can get some control over feeling positive. Yes, people exercise to look better and that is great, and people exercise to participate in sport which is also great: but many do not understand the immediate and long-lasting mental health benefits of exercise. If you want to understand a neuroscientist's explanation of this please click here for a short TED talk...forgive the American ending ...but she explains the benefits to your mood, memory and mental health very well. She is talking from her own experience of having not exercised and the differences in herself she then noticed. You can literally build in protection against incurable diseases such as alzheimers and dementia.

2. we now have the time to build exercise into our day in a way we may not have experienced before so it really is an excellent time to create a new and wonderful habit....and you can start gently and gradually...it really does not need to be painful.

3. we are all now aware of what a high risk category for Covid 19 means...to put it bluntly, exercise significantly reduces the risk of someone developing heart disease and diabetes...two of the most significant risk factors for this illness...so apart from the brain benefits you can reduce your risks of becoming a high risk category.

4. the government has encouraged us all to exercise and it is one of the few reasons we can leave our home i.e. they know how important it is to our mental and physical wellbeing to get up and move

5. so much about exercise is focused on the gym or sport but there are very simple and effective ways you can exercise at home...even in a confined space. So we have designed this to create a wide range of exercises you can try:

  • in your living room or bedroom,

  • outside in the garden/on a patio

  • with or without equipment

  • as a beginner, intermediate or advanced exerciser/athlete

We have included a gym option because some may have a home gym or a range of gym equipment they can use at home.

You can train with an Olympian or an elite skier and we'll add some more training partners in the future. You can follow our suggestions or download a template you can use to create your own programme. There's everything you need to construct your own safe workout with plenty of variety to keep it interesting. If you want to order the resistance bands please click here...it's a separate supplier and we take no money from this introduction...and they are very low cost.

If you don't want to listen to the TED talk then why not use these posters to help nudge you to exercise more frequently (ideally 3-4 times a week). Maybe, print them out and put somewhere you can't ignore them ...or keep them on your phone...share with others to encourage friends and family members to take positive control over their mood, energy and confidence.
